Can a Notary Notarize an Electronic Signature in California?

No—California requires the signer to appear in person, even if the document is electronic.
In California, a notary public must physically witness the signer at the time of notarization. While documents can be prepared and shared electronically, the actual notarization still requires an in-person appearance. California has not authorized remote online notarization (RON), so a notary cannot notarize a signature remotely.
This means that even if you sign a document electronically, you will still need to meet with a California notary in person to complete the notarization. A mobile notary can travel to your home, office, or hospital to make the process more convenient.
To avoid delays, make sure your document is ready and you have valid identification before your notary appointment.
