Can a notary notarize a power of attorney?

Yes—a power of attorney can be notarized if the signer is present, properly identified, and willing.

In California, a notary public can notarize a power of attorney as long as the signer appears in person and provides valid identification. The notary must confirm the signer is aware of what they are signing and is doing so voluntarily.

A power of attorney is one of the most common documents that requires notarization, especially for legal, financial, and real estate matters. Many institutions will not accept it unless it has been properly notarized.

If the signer is unable to travel, a mobile notary can come to your home, office, or hospital to complete the notarization.

Before your notary appointment, make sure the document is complete (but not signed) and have your valid ID ready to avoid delays.
