Can a Notary Notarize a Document in Another Language?

Yes, a notary can notarize a document in another language, but the notary must be able to communicate directly with the signer and understand the notarial act being performed.

In California, a notary public is responsible for verifying the signer’s identity, willingness, and awareness. The notary does not need to understand the entire document, but they must be able to communicate clearly with the signer to confirm they understand what they are signing.

If the notary and signer cannot communicate directly, the notarization cannot proceed. A translator cannot be used to perform the notarial communication.

If you have a document in another language, it’s important to work with a mobile notary who can ensure all requirements are properly met to avoid delays.
